Alquife Mines

These iron ore mines were exploited by two seperate companies, Alquife and El Marquesado, both of which are now defunct. The ore from the Alquife Company was sent via the Linares, Guadix, Almería Railway to El Cable Inglés in Almería. This branch, which was for commercial traffic only, commenced service on 27th December 1899 and operated continuously until 1973 when the mine closed.

The El Marquesado Mine connected via The Linares, Guadix, Almería Railway at Calahorra-Ferreira Station to The GSSR so that some of the ore was transported to El Hornillo. The mines ran from the beginning of the 20th century up until 1996.
