These botanical gardens were started in about 1850 by George and Amalia Loring. They include a palatial manor house as well as other sundry buildings. The collection was famous worldwide for its variety of flora.
It is probable that Amalia was the main mover and shaker for the creation and maintenance of this beautiful area, but she must have had much support from George, suggesting that in spite of being a hard businessman who had many disagreements with The GSSR, he had a human side as well.
