This was a huge factory. In the day there was a large sugar beet production in the Caniles area, and this crop used to come to the factory for conversion to refined sugar, molasses etc. Production (250 tonnes per day) started in 1901 and ended in the 1970s. Like The GSSR, it saw highs and lows during its life. At one point Granadan sugar production represented 40% of all Spanish production.
The GSSR was of use for the transport of the factory's products, and there was a branch line which ran from Caniles Station into the factory's grounds.
