THE BRIDGES OF THE G.S.S.R.

From Guadix to Lorca and Águilas

The purpose of this page is to show the amount of construction that was required to run the line from Guadix to Lorca. The quality of the stonework on the bridges is excellent and is still standing in good condition today, 130 years on. In addition, there are hundreds of culverts, cuttings and embankments, all built by hand.

It is worth considering how much this would cost to build nowadays. Certainly more than £200 million in today's money - over one thousand bridges/culverts, the workshops in Águilas, the stations, level crossings etc.

Additionally, all of this was built between when The GSSR was inaugurated in December of 1885 and 1894 (El Hornillo is a different matter). Every bridge and culvert (only the 172 most important ones shown here) had to be designed, approved and then built. It was a truly gargantuan effort.

One can see the relative amounts of work needed by section in the statistics page.

Note: all bridges/culverts on this page are high enough for a six foot tall man to walk through.
