There was mining activity in the Puerto de los Peines (Aguilón) centuries ago where the ore was carried down to the beach on mules to be loaded onto ships. Activity increased exponentially after the arrival of The GSSR and there were many concessions, one of the most productive being 'Quien tal pensara', which caused many problems for The GSSR. Although mainly iron ore, there was also some lead and gypsum mined here.
A quarry was created in 1983 to load ballast onto Renfe trains to renew track.
