Important in the days of steam for the shunting of iron ore trains due to the incline over Puerto de los Peines. This is where the 12 wagon iron ore trains were split in two to allow the loco to pull the train up the steep incline. The loco would leave six of the wagons in the sidings (no longer in existence) at Puerto and return to Pulpí for the other six.
The station sits in a huge fertile basin and was busy with both passengers and goods - mainly vegetables and fruit, especially tomatoes. Also goods in the form of hand-manufactured items.
