One of the larger stations on the GSSR with engine sheds and shunting yard. Very busy in GSSR days with passengers and goods with through trains from Granada through to Alicante, Barcelona and France. Heavily staffed with a station manager, telegraphist, customer services manager, arrivals manager, ticket master, two pointsmen and a porter on each shift.
One curiosity is that, although Lorca San Diego was the start of The GSSR, point zero for all of the distance markers on the line started at the entrance to the station (the station being at Km 0.171).
